Winnipeg Free Press - ONLINE EDITION
Your weekend wine forecast
OK, let's start with a wee bit of self-promotion... if you're not doing anything tonight, pop by Aqua Books, where yours truly will be one of the guests on Kelly Hughes Live!
Need a reason to come? How about this - one of the other guests is the legendary Ami Hassan of the Falafel Place... (you know, the guy always yelling, "Who's leaving?" as the place fills up). Also on deck for the show are Culinary Arts instructor and chef extraordinaire Jeff Gill and music by Jackpine. Things get underway at 7:00 p.m.
Further to my column this past weekend, I was contacted by the venerable Rae and Jerry's Steakhouse and informed that they have a promotion on right now that may be of interest to golfing/wine drinking types. For every bottle of Mike Weir wine sold, they're donating five dollars to the Mike Weir Foundation. There's both a red and a white that are being poured by the glass and which are also available by the bottle.
If you love wine and are smitten with cheese, you'll want to check out this event happening tomorrow and being put on by two Manitoba outfits. The New Bothwell Chamber of Commerce and Recreation Association presents the New Bothwell Wine & Cheese Festival, which starts at 7 p.m. tomorrow night in the town of New Bothwell. There will be a live band, fireworks and more, with cheeses provided by Bothwell Cheese (naturally) and wine from Banville & Jones. Tickets are $25 and are available from Banville & Jones.
There are some Limited Time Offers on right now at Liquor Marts that may be of interest to all you imbibers out there. Among the many markdowns are a few gems worth picking up (in my humblest of opinions) - here are my top 5 whites and reds to scoop up while they're on sale:
- Peter Lehmann Clancy's White (Australia)
- Wirra Wirra Scrubby Rise White (Australia)
- Chocalan Viognier (Chile)
- Rene Barbier White (Spain)
- Rober Mondavi Private Selection Coastal Chardonnay (California, USA)
- James Oatley Tik Tok Cabernet Suavignon (Australia)
- Chocalan Grand Reserve Pinot Noir (Chile)
- Cantina Tollo Colle Secco Montepulciano D'Abbruzzo (Italy)
- Aranleon Bles (Spain)
- Columbia Crest Grand Estates Merlot (Washington, USA)
There are also some single malt scotch, beer, spirits and coolers on sale.
And hey, speaking of coolers, who remembers this classic ad for Seagram's Golden Wine Coolers featuring a white-suited Bruce Willis?
Somehow I don't think a sparkling wine cooler would be Bruce Willis' beverage of choice, but I could be wrong. Their slogan in the many other ads featuring Bruno was, "It's wet and it's dry". What a catchy hook!
Have a nice weekend, and may your basement be free of water! Go Blackhawks!

About Ben MacPhee-Sigurdson
When he wasn't bashing on a drum kit in local punk rock bands, Ben spent the mid '90s hucking cases of wine around to pay for two English degrees. Now he's the Winnipeg Free Press wine columnist and blogger.
The extent of Ben's wine experience in the mid-90s was memories of accidentally leaving a bottle of White Zinfandel in the freezer overnight, and the ensuing mess he was left with. Between 1996 and 2005 Ben absorbed all he could about wine while working at wine shops to pay for school. Meanwhile, he was churning out papers for his BA and MA in English (from the Universities of Winnipeg and Manitoba, respectively).
Ben became the Winnipeg Free Press' weekly wine columnist in 2005, and two years later joined Wine Access magazine as a contributor, a member of their national tasting panel and a judge at the Canadian Wine Awards and International Value Wine Awards until the magazine closed up shop in 2013.
In 2013 Ben joined the Winnipeg Free Press as a copy/web editor.
