Lessons from B.C. and Ontario

The Manitoba NDP has spent the last few months attacking Conservative Leader Hugh McFadyen in TV ads, portraying him as a slash-and-burner who learned at the knee of former premier Gary Filmon.

McFadyen was Filmon's chief of staff.

McFadyen has responded with his own TV ads and has distanced himself from the Filmon years.

Both camps have more TV ads in the can that we’ll start seeing in the next few days as we march toward the Oct. 4 vote.

Out of curiosity, I searched out what other political parties are saying and doing in provinces that have fall elections.

Now, from what I can gather, compared with the rest, the campaign in Manitoba looks like it will be a lot noisier than the others, the exception being Ontario.

I know it’s not scientific by any means, but it appears to me it’s noisier here because things are so close between Premier Greg Selinger’s NDP and McFadyen’s PCs. It’ll be a dogfight down to the last minute. Jon Gerrard’s Liberals are predicted to finish a distant third.

In Ontario, things are even closer. Pundits say it’s so close between Premier Dalton McGuinty’s Liberals and Tim Hudak’s PCs that the outcome is up for grabs.

As a reporter, I sure hope it’s a slugfest here. No offense to the other provinces, but covering the fall elections in Newfoundland, PEI and Saskabush look to be real snoozers.

Larry Kusch has been a journalist for 30 years, the last 20 with the Winnipeg Free Press. His is one of the newspaper's two legislative bureau reporters.

Bruce is one of five reporters who won a National Newspaper Award for the paper’s coverage of the 1997 Flood of the Century. He's also the recipient of the 1996 Volunteer Centre of Winnipeg Media Golden Hand Award and the 1995 Canadian Federation of Humane Societies Media Commendation Award.

In a past life Bruce worked at YMCA-YWCA Camp Stephens. He has a blog where he and others write about camp and the people who worked and played there.
