For the first time in its history the Winnipeg Free Press provided wall to wall live video coverage of a major event - the 2010 Civic Election.
This was uncharted territory. I mean REALLY uncharted. We knew we have the capabilities to do live video - we've been doing it for almost two years now - but three hours of live coverage from the mayoral incumbent's and challenger's election night parties was an awfully big task to manage and a logistical nightmare.
But with a little elbow grease, a little luck, a few resources and a little cash - we made it happen. Technical difficulties were present - as they are in many TV broadcasts of similar events - but when all was said and done - the Winnipeg Free Press - a traditional newspaper outlet turned multimedia news organization - provided more live video on election night than any other media outlet in the city.
I'm extremely proud of the job of our entire team. This was a huge, risky experiment and it paid off. Over drinks at a local watering hole after all was said and done, a few of us were already talking about how to build upon this success for the 2011 Provincial Election. Stay tuned.

About Tyler Walsh
After a short but successful stint on CKND-TV's The Great Spelling Bee in 1993, Tyler Walsh knew the bright lights of television were in his future. That was before the World Wide Web came along. He lived the dream for five years, working as a news producer at Global Television in Winnipeg. Never one to back away from a challenge, Tyler left the TV business behind and joined the Winnipeg Free Press in 2008 as the company's first Multimedia Editor. He's worked with the online team and photo department to shape and grow the video product at winnipegfreepress.com, which now includes live streaming video, documentary features and live and interactive events from Canada's first News Café, which is where you'll find Tyler and other members of the online team.
