One of the young legislative pages rocked it today, putting to shame all the adults who have spent the last several days filibustering and cry-babying and calling for endless points of order and matters of privilege. The page, a high school student, had to stand in the centre of the house and call out the names of all 57 MLAs (making sure to add “honourable” before the cabinet ministers’ names) as they rose to vote on a challenge to a speaker’s ruling. I can’t keep some of the MLAs straight even after a year spent looking down on all of them from the press gallery, but this page recited each name like she was reading them off her hand. Which she wasn’t. Lots of poise and she never missed a beat. She got a big round of applause afterward, which was nice. Then the pols went back to yelling at each other.
