I know everyone is shaking their heads at the moderately preposterous idea of Lillian Thomas running for mayor. She’s been a councillor for two decades and she holds her seat easily but she’s best known for being marginal and screechy.
She might represent her ward fairly well, but she doesn’t have any new policy ideas, doesn’t do any smart politicking to get stuff done and she’s not nearly as effective as Jenny Gerbasi or Dan Vandal in opposition. Serving on every council subcommittee doesn’t qualify you to be mayor.
Instead of retiring quietly, though, she’s decided to do a little raving and burning at the close of day.
And why not?
No one else is stepping up to give Sam, his healthy approval ratings and his lethargic approach to governing a run for their money.
The left was supposed to rustle up a good candidate - rumour was maybe Judy W-L might run – but that hasn’t materialized and it’s almost too late to bother.
There is all this low-level grumbling on both sides of the spectrum about the listlessness at city hall, but no one is willing to put their name on the ballot.
Except Lillian. For that alone, she deserves some respect.
