We get a lot of crazy emails and phone calls here at the Freep, as does every newsroom.
My fave is the anti-Hydro guy who sends me anonymous brown envelopes full of cut-and-paste rants about the rats, "fast-talking, slick con-men" and "blood-sucking unions" that run the province.

Someone once sent my colleague Carol Sanders a blow-up photocopy of one of her stories covered in racist profanity. We posted it on the bulletin board until we realized kids often tromp through the newsroom on school tours.
Anyway, this email was particularly timely, since I am working on a story for our Democracy Project about women voters. How did he know?

Upon observing the elected NDP MLA's in South Winnipeg , it is abhorently disgusting to find out the obvious. There is NOT A SINGLE MALE NDP MLA IN SOUTH WINNIPEG !!! WHY ??? Just about all the NDP MALs in South Winnipeg are FEMALES !!!
Is it because Winnipeg and Manitoba has run out of MALE POPULATION or what ?
My investigation amply shows that NDP's political machinery responsible for selecting and eventually nominating the candidates is BLATANTLY BIASSED and DELIBERATELY DISCRIMINATORY AGAINST THE " MALE GENDER " Frankly , I am DEEPLY OFFENDED upon this systematically practised policies of ARROGANT NDP that has been shoved down our throats SHAMELESSLY. It is abundantly crystal clear that in order to CURRY FAVOUR with the female votes , the NDP is trashing supressing and preventing the MALE GENDER from getting nominated. SHAME ON YOU NDP.
It is high time the NDP conducts a thorough investigation as to why the bloody hell there is NOT A SINGLE MALE NDP MLA IN SOUTH WINNIPEG.

About Mary Agnes Welch
Mary Agnes Welch joined the Free Press in 2002, first as a general assignment reporter and then covering city hall and the Manitoba legislature before moving to her current post as public policy reporter.
Before Winnipeg, she worked at the Windsor Star and the Odessa American, a small daily newspaper in West Texas. There, in addition to covering more than 20 counties, she took high school football scores from coaches all over West Texas by phone every Friday night.
Mary Agnes is a graduate of Columbia University’s journalism school, has won several Western Ontario Newspaper Awards and has been part of two teams of reporters nominated for a Michener Award. In 2011, she was nominated for a National Newspaper Award in the beat category. She is also the former national president of the Canadian Association of Journalists.
She once misspelled "Shih Tzu" in the paper and received 37 emails from angry dog-owners.
