Downtown!

With apologies to Petula Clark

When you need a home and you ain’t got no money

You can always go: Downtown

When you’ve got worries, ten grand in a hurry

Seems to help, I know: Downtown

Just talk to city council – they will help you buy a condo

They’re not paying subsidies; they’re going way beyond, Oh!

How can you lose?

The lights are much brighter there

You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares

So go downtown

Things will be great when you’re downtown

Consider it fate you’ll go, downtown

Everything’s waiting for you

Don’t worry ’bout crime or the lack of a grocer

There are patios: Downtown

Maybe you know some little places to go to

Where they never close: Downtown

Just listen to the music at The Cube and you’ll start swaying

There’ll be no second thoughts about downtown ’cause you’ll be staying

Happy again

The lights are much brighter there

You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares

So go downtown

We’ve got the cash for you, downtown

Go buy a flat or two, downtown

You’re gonna be alright now.

Adapted from Downtown, composed by Tony Hatch and recorded by Petula Clark in 1964.
