Boyfriend's attempted rape was no birthday present

  • Print

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My boyfriend and I went to a mall on my birthday so he could watch me try on some clothes. His big idea was to treat me to an outfit when we found something great. We did find some very cool stuff at one store. But, when I turned my back to go into the changeroom, and come out to do a fashion show for him, he slipped in behind me and locked the door. Then he said the "little condition" for his buying the clothing was that I have sex with him there in the change cubicle. I told him to get lost and he pinned me against the door and tried to force me to do it. I finally managed to knee him, and ran out of the store, buttoning up my clothes up, and called my roommate to come and pick me up. My birthday was spoiled; I just stayed home crying and have been crying ever since. He's been trying to call me to apologize. My best friend says I should take his call and apologize because "nothing happened anyway" and I overreacted. Did I? -- Starting To Wonder, Wpg.

Dear Not Sure: Don't call this guy! If anybody tries to force a girl/woman to have sex (attempted rape), she's entitled to fight back and go to police and charge the person. No doubt your ex thought you'd be too embarrassed to make a fuss. Date rape is rape. And yes, some women would have given in, so as not to cause a scene. But, others would have screamed for help and made a big scene and called police. It's fortunate he didn't overpower you. Think he wouldn't try it again with someone else? It's less likely if he doesn't get away with it. You may want to call police and/or talk to Klinic's Sexual Assault team's 24-hour line (786-8631). Website is www.klinic.mb.ca/counsel-sexual.htm.
