Your Weekend Weather
Let's not beat around the proverbial bush, Winnipeg -- What are you giving your mom for Mother's Day?
What? Are you kidding me, Winnipeg? This makes two years in a row you've forgotten Sunday is the one (bad word) day on which you are expected to show your mom how much you care.
Remember what you gave mom last year? I do! You gave her a gloomy, overcast, rainy day, didn't you? If I recall correctly, Mom wasn't too pleased with that, was she?
Well, you're in luck, Winnipeg.
I suspected this might happen, so I've arranged for everyone to give their mom a totally amazing Sunday filled with sunshine, above-normal temperatures, gentle breezes, rainbows, unicorns and rivers of chocolate.
OK, I'm kidding about the rivers of chocolate, but not about the great weather, which I confirmed with my good buddy Dale Marciski of Environment Canada.
"It looks like a really nice Mother's Day," Dale vowed Friday. "The cold front we had Thursday night is moving east and being replaced by a high-pressure system, which means clearing skies and sunshine through the weekend and into next week."
The weather office promises Mom can look forward to sun and a high of 21 C today, compared to the normal high of 19 C at this time of year. On her big day, Mom will be blessed with more sun and a high of 25 C. "That's almost summer-like for temperature," Dale beamed.
The rest of the week looks even more awesome, with a high of -- please apply sunscreen and put on a floppy hat before reading this next bit -- 29 C on Monday.
What with the glorious weather, it will be easy to take Mom out and show her a good time. You can start by taking in the Mutts Love Moms Pancake Breakfast in support of Manitoba Mutts Dog Rescue on Sunday at Sprockett's Doggy Day Camp at 975 Thomas Ave.
After breakfast -- which runs from 9:30-11 a.m. and costs $5 for adults and $3 for kids -- there's an adoption fair, where they hope to find homes for about 40 dogs and puppies. Would your mom love a mutt? Hey, she loves you, right? I'm just saying.
Mom would also enjoy a big glass of vino at Love, Wine and Song, a Winnipeg Singers fundraiser set for 7 p.m. tonight at First Unitarian Universalist Church, 603 Wellington Cres. Tickets are $45 at 944-9100. Trust me, it'll be grape.
Or get Mom's motor running at the Red River Valley Swap Meet Sunday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at Red River Exhibition Park, where she can check out the show & shine and the hot street rods.
On the other hand, Winnipeg, you've already given Mom a beautiful sunny day, so just sit back and relax, because that's enough to make her proud of you, right? Ha ha ha! On second thought, a puppy is starting to sound like a good idea.
