Your weekend weather
As my old friend Forrest used to say, "The May long weekend is like a box of chocolates -- you never know what you're gonna get!"
Sadly, as any true Manitoban knows, we have a pretty good idea what we'll get during the unofficial start of summer -- rain, followed by scattered periods of rain, topped off with a threat of intermittent rain.
The important thing to remember is you really don't care, because you'll be at the cottage all weekend drinking enough beer to float a battleship and playing Yahtzee, so relax.
For me and that other guy who don't have a cottage to go to over the holiday weekend, we are looking at a mixed bag, meteorologically speaking.
According to Environment Canada, people stuck in the city will see -- get ready for a holiday surprise -- rain this morning with a chance of thundershowers, clearing in the evening, with a daytime high of 18 C, which is a touch below the normal high of 20 C at this festive time of year.
On Sunday, when I plan to be sitting in my backyard demonstrating my grilling prowess for a group of meat-loving friends, the weather office says it will be sunny with a pleasant high of 21 C.
The outlook for Victoria Day is a mix of sun and cloud with a high of 18 C, while the rest of the week is represented on the weather office's website by forlorn-looking cartoon clouds leaking cartoon rain.
For those of you at the cottage, here's some fun stuff to do:
1) Whine incessantly to anyone who will listen about how much work you have to do "because having a cottage is just like owning two (very bad word) houses."
2) Call everyone who isn't at the cottage to ensure they know how much better your life is than theirs;
3) Wonder what's making that strange sound while you're trying to sleep. Is that a bear rooting through the garbage? Hold on, I'll go look... AIEEEEEEEE!!!
For those of you staying in the city, there's even more fun to be had. For example, wander over to Heritage Victoria Community Centre on Sturgeon Road for the annual Optimist Assiniboia's Buffalo BBQ, which runs to Monday and features some awesome thrill rides.
If you're an aviation geek or just love loud noises, the Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds will be doing their aerial acrobatics over The Forks today from 3-3:30 p.m.
We're talking more than 50 formations and manoeuvres set to music. Can't hear the theme from Top Gun too much, can you?
Also at The Forks, the Asian Canadian Festival runs Sunday to Monday under the canopy.
Nearby, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights is offering guided perimeter tours today. Make reservations at www.tours@museumforhumanrights.ca .
Whatever you do, take time to relax, enjoy friends and family and... hey... what's that huge hairy thing licking our garbage cans? AIEEEEEE!!! Run, Forrest, run!
