"I am currently reading Something Fierce: Memoirs of a Revolutionary Daughter, by Carmen Aguirre. This non-fiction book recounts Vancouver-based Aguirre's return to South America with her family as a child to join the revolutionary movement seeking to overthrow Chile's dictator, Gen. Augusto Pinochet. On Sept. 11, 1973, Chile's military overthrew democratically elected president Salvador Allende. Both the coup and its aftermath were bloody, and among those taken political prisoner was my own mother. In Something Fierce, Aguirre recounts her coming of age in the 1980s in the Chilean underground. On the surface this is the story of a faraway place, but in reality it is not."
