The Republican Party
Most people agree if the United States is going to get back on track during the next four years, the Republicans and the Democrats are going to have to learn to play nice together.
So how is that working out so far?
You be the judge. Former Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney told his donors recently Barack Obama won re-election because of the "gifts" he gave blacks, Hispanics, women and young voters -- gifts such as immigration proposals aimed at Hispanics, free contraception coverage and allowing more young people to go to college and stay on their parents' health plans longer.
"He made a big effort on small things," Romney said, adding that the Republican campaign was about "big issues for the whole country."
He also insisted his team made no significant campaign missteps.
So... according to the Republicans' main man, Obama won because he concentrated on "small things" -- things that are important to women, young people and immigrants. And, the majority of voters must be stupid, because Romney ran a superb campaign and they still didn't vote for him.
If the Republicans continue with an attitude like that, there could come a time when rapprochement won't even matter anymore. Those Democrat-voting young people are going to be around for a long time. Women aren't going away. Immigrants are changing the face of America. If the Republicans don't start focusing on "small things" themselves, there will be precious few of them around with which to play nice.
