The Toronto mayor was in court defending himself in a conflict-of-interest case that could result in him being tossed from office midway through his four-year term. Grilled on the witness stand, Ford admitted for the first time he should not have participated in a council vote over whether he improperly used his city council status to raise funds for his football foundation. However, he still says he didn't know any better.

Diamond thieves

A Chinese man finds himself awaiting surgery after he swallowed a 1.5-carat diamond he was attempting to steal. The man was with a partner at the Facets Sri Lanka jewellery show in Colombo, when they tried to distract a stall owner who was showing them the gem. When the owner realized what was happening, one of the men ran away and the other swallowed the stone. It was hoped the gem would be recovered by administering laxatives. However, the diamond is lodged in his body.

The Alberta lawyer, who is awaiting an appointment to the Senate, was forced to repay $5,399.86 in expenses charged to the University of Calgary as chairman of the board of governors. Black expensed more than $28,000 over 18 months on travel and hospitality, according to the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. His predecessor expensed just $434.01 in 31/2 years.
