A Chinese man finds himself awaiting surgery after he swallowed a 1.5-carat diamond he was attempting to steal. The man was with a partner at the Facets Sri Lanka jewellery show in Colombo, when they tried to distract a stall owner who was showing them the gem. When the owner realized what was happening, one of the men ran away and the other swallowed the stone. It was hoped the gem would be recovered by administering laxatives. However, the diamond is lodged in his body.
The Alberta lawyer, who is awaiting an appointment to the Senate, was forced to repay $5,399.86 in expenses charged to the University of Calgary as chairman of the board of governors. Black expensed more than $28,000 over 18 months on travel and hospitality, according to the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. His predecessor expensed just $434.01 in 31/2 years.
