On the Night Table with Barry Prentice

"After seeing Spielberg's Lincoln, many would hunger for the rest of the story. Doris Kearns Goodwin's 2005 biography, Team of Rivals, was the reference for the movie, but Spielberg only used the last two of 27 chapters. Anyone who would like to learn how Abraham Lincoln arrived at that historic moment will find this book authoritative and interesting. But it is not a quick read, and at times, the descriptions get a bit gossipy, as the various characters fight for the spotlight. Still this book can teleport you to a time of great drama, social upheaval and political shenanigans. At the other end of the scale is The Book of General Ignorance by John Lloyd and John Mitchinson. Easy to pick up, or put down, whenever the mood strikes."
