"While in Mexico City location scouting for a supernatural ghost story I'll be directing, I discovered Juan Rulfo, the pioneering writer who inspired magic-realism. His output was spare: a book of short stories, El Llano en llamas (1953), and his seminal short novel Pedro Páramo (1955). On my down time away from set (I'm acting in Smilin' Jack -- The Jack Layton Story), I've been holed up in my haunted Winnipeg hotel room, immersing myself in Rulfo's world, where voices collide and superimposed landscapes embrace the living and the dead. It's atmospheric dream-logic storytelling that helps me get into the altered space required for my work."
