Letter Of The Day
Re: Royal Albert killer gets maximum prison term, Dec. 20.
I have been following the Sydney Teerhuis story from the start. Mike McIntyre makes a statement in Saturday's article that Teerhuis is the first local person to be convicted of second-degree murder and get the maximum time for it. My sister, Michele Jewell (Hall), was murdered by her husband, Michael, in February 1984. At sentencing, he was also given the maximum term and, despite his attempts to use appeals, the faint-hope clause and parole, is still in prison.
The 25th year is up in a few months, and it is likely that he will be in prison for some time yet. I believe that in both cases, the damage done to the body after death likely had a bearing on the length of the sentence. My condolences go out to the Greene family.
