LETTER OF THE DAY

Stay out of it, Sid

Re: The answer is so simple it almost defies belief, Jan. 10.

Union members across the country are getting laid off and these people are hurting and they are, or at least were, dues-paying union members. Union members need our unions to focus on their job security, contract language/negotiations, representations, decent wages and safe working conditions in these times. Their dues enable us to do what we do -- so perhaps we should concentrate on them instead of what is happening in a conflict that we could never even begin to understand.

I am the president of a fairly large CUPE local and I am opposed to CUPE Ontario's president, Sid Ryan, taking any position regarding Israel.

As a unionist I believe, along with a large percentage of rank-and-file members, that we have to take care of our own members' needs before sticking our noses into other countries' disputes, be it Israel or any other country. We (the union) have a very diverse membership as we represent members from most all-religious and ethnic backgrounds and we should not be forming opinions on any group, country, religion or conflict.

Terry Egan
President, CUPE Local 110
Winnipeg
