Letter of the Day

A lack of leadership

  • Print

Randy Turner's Dec. 27 story A beautiful game ... and a spoiled sport refers to "those mortals who rely on jobs related to the NHL -- restaurant employees, arena staff, etc." Too rarely has lockout coverage focused on the impact on these people who had expected to look after their basic living expenses through NHL-related jobs.

When the Jets returned to our city, much was made of its positive effect on our community; the owners and players were hailed as civic leaders of sorts. The current behaviour of the NHL billionaires and millionaires does not reflect civic leadership. In fact, it reflects just the opposite.

It'll be a long time before I am impressed by photo ops of Jets players volunteering at Siloam Mission or the team owner promoting We Day, when safeguarding the depths of their own pockets outweighs their commitment to real social justice.
