Aboriginals want good life, too

  • Print

Re: Evacuee list has long raised flags (March 20). Anyone who has been to a reserve knows it isn't a picnic living there. Housing is deplorable and jobs are few. So when an opportunity comes along to move to a hotel and a place where there are jobs, one would have to be crazy not to jump on it.

Now everyone is pretending to be surprised at the exodus that is taking place. These folks may not look like you and me, but they are you and me. They are Manitobans who want what we want, a safe place to raise their families, jobs and a place to call home.

Ottawa could turn this all around in a minute by allowing our First Nations people to move to the many houses sitting empty at Kapyong Barracks, at least as a temporary measure until they decide to either move back to the rez or share in what we take for granted.
