All things Scottish

  • Print

Did no one edit Rob Harris' article on the Commonwealth Games, Great Scot! Is it the end? (July 24)?

Since he is writing about, and presumably is in, Scotland, he should know that there should be no "e" in "whisky."

In his description of the garb worn by the Canadian team, he states that they are wearing "red plaid pants." Plaid is a Scottish term referring to a blanket or a wrap. Using the word "plaid" to describe a tartan pattern (a sett) is what one expects to find in the L.L. Bean catalogue.

The sett in question is that of the official Canadian tartan.

This mislabelling is incredibly annoying, much like that of using "khaki" (a colour) to identify a trouser style (chinos).
