Never, never, in all my years as a Winnipegger, have I seen this city paralyzed by such a small amount of snow! Leaving my house well after the usual morning traffic rush, I was amazed, dismayed and stupefied by the miles-long line of traffic heading downtown.
It took almost an hour to get a distance usually covered in two minutes or less, and I was not even close to where I had to get to. I tried detouring, but all roads leading downtown were clogged with snail-paced traffic. I gave up and returned home to wonder what had become of Winnipeg's once-savvy winter drivers and why there had been no sanding trucks on the streets previous to the snowfall.
It's time this city got proactive instead of reactive when dealing with coming snowfalls. City sanding trucks need to be on the streets the day and night before the drivers of this city, who don't know how to drive in snow, hit the streets.
It's a couple of measly inches of snow, people. You need to drive a little bit slower than usual but not 30 kilometres an hour slower! Either get the sanding trucks out in plenty of time or start giving driving tests in winter and winter only for all Manitobans.
