Re: Perfect pairing (Sept. 25). If Doreen Pendgracs' four-year chocolate odyssey had been thorough, she would, no doubt, have discovered that chocolate is not simply something that just tastes good. In fact, it can be quite bitter.
Child labour, child trafficking and child slavery are a real fact of the chocolate business, and chocolate is big business. This has been documented in Toronto journalist Carol Off's book Bitter Chocolate.
Chances are the next chocolate Pendgracs stuffs in her mouth will have been produced by a desperately poor child not permitted to go to school, a child separated from its family, a child with a hungry belly. Child protection, education and safety trump everything that is wrong with chocolate.
