Cig taxes too darn low
Re: Taxing is a factor (Letters, May 7). Vince Harden provides historical cases in the U.S, Ireland and Germany where increased smoking rates followed after increased tobacco taxes and other policies. Additionally, he provides a list of countries with high tobacco taxes and high smoking rates.
I'm sure there are no other factors involved in these statistics, and we have no choice but to simply conclude higher tobacco taxes lead to more people smoking.
I don't know about you, but I find that the current cost of cigarettes just isn't high enough for me to start smoking. If only the government would step in and hike the taxes even higher, then I'd have no choice but to take up smoking. The cost would just be too high to resist.
