Letter of the Day

City of honking offenders

Thanks to Doug Speirs for his column on the atrocious driving habits of far too many Winnipeggers (Italians have nothing on Winnipeg drivers, Feb. 22).

Having gone on many road trips with my family all over Canada and the U.S., plus much of Europe and some of Asia, I understand Speirs' point. For years I have driven my daughter to and from school. I use St. Mary's Road, then go to work down Marion Street. This area is home to some of the most deadly intersections in the city.

I was not aware that using signal lights had become passé, nor that slowing down while approaching red lights merited a good honking. How about in a drive-through when you don't immediately move up that half a car length? That's a honkable offence, according to many Winnipeggers.

Come on, Winnipeggers, let's ease up on the gas pedal, signal nice and early, and give each other a bit of courtesy. Arriving a minute or two sooner to your destination will make no difference. The risks you take to achieve that, however, may have an undesirable impact.
