Letter of the Day

Claims without substance

There seems to be no sense or value in defending Mayor Katz, Phil Sheegl or Sandy Shindleman against accusations and rumours that have ensnared them these past three months. No sense, because there is no substance to the egregious claims by the petty and envious. No value, because any who do show support are dismissed as sycophants or conspirators.

The unsubstantiated claims of malfeasance have yet to be proven in any way that could show fault by any of these three victims of slander. If one can be vilified for what seems to have happened, then the accusers are equally exposed to claims of ill intent beyond just poor judgment. The CBC has spent more energy claiming it was first to break a story that has yet to be proven than on the requisite research to substantiate its innuendo.

The Winnipeg Free Press has allowed Dan Lett to spin negativity out of what one can only construe as spite. And the usual coterie of naysayers has continued to fan diminishing embers where flames never existed. The only balance we have seen has been on the Free Press editorial page.

We have backed our politicians into the wrong decisions, for the right reasons, and unfairly terminated contracts to improve optics, not function. And by promoting churlish voyeurism, we have done our community more damage than what these three are accused of doing. It is time to be back to business, publishing facts and managing a city.
