Letter of the Day

Cleaner than algae

Thank you for the excellent and continued coverage of the "flood that never ends," including the graphic Page 1 photo in your July 30 edition.

It is important that all Manitobans understand and appreciate the ongoing water-management challenges facing many farmers, communities and the province as a whole. We have a very long way to go in addressing these complex challenges.

However, Free Press readers should be made aware that Lake Manitoba is not yet suffering the excessive nutrient-loading problems Lake Winnipeg is. That July 30 photo does not depict "stagnant water covered in green algae." The green growth is actually duckweed, an amazing plant that in fact reduces algae growth, filters contaminants and is currently being explored as potentially limitless source of clean energy.
