Re: Bombers QB Pierce has concussion but wants to play (Online, Oct. 2). Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Tim Burke is a relic whose views on concussions deserve being left on the curb. He not so subtly showed his cavalier approach to concussions -- which the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention properly describe as a traumatic brain injury -- by saying quarterback Buck Pierce only has "a mild concussion and not anything really bad."
There is no such thing as a traumatic brain injury that isn't anything really bad. For proof, ask any of the 3,689 former NFL players involved in the 155 concussion-related lawsuits against the NFL.
Both the Blue Bombers and the CFL need to breathe in the smelling salts, give their heads a shake and treat concussions for what they are -- a serious public health problem that deserves more than what it is getting in Canadian professional football.
