Cut the vegetarian jokes

Re: Never mind Angelina's leg, what about her weight? (March 5). Reporter Misty Harris jokes vegetarians may be the "only people who haven't encouraged the actress to eat a cheeseburger." Clearly, she doesn't know a vegetarian from a twisted elbow.

I am 55 years old and have been a vegetarian most of my life. I have always maintained a very healthy weight and a healthy lifestyle. I've never been over- or underweight. I amaze my husband at how much I can eat and that I generally eat more than most women I know.

It's just that I make healthy selections in my food choices, for the most part, and therefore I never have to deny myself a treat when I want it.

I was truly disgusted the day after the Oscars when the so-called fashion experts were making such a big deal about how "glamorous and beautiful" Jolie looked at the Oscars. I seriously question their standards in this regard and would suggest they raise the bar considerably on their vision of beauty and perhaps include an element of health in it.

I was appalled at how much attention she got, and I feel for the young women of today and who they have for role models in our society. But then again, I had Twiggy as a role model. For those who remember her in the '60s, she was no porker, either.

Harris should do her homework before she makes insinuating comments in the newspaper about vegetarians. I could make some insinuating comments about her right now, but vegetarians have more class than that.
