Depression happens everywhere

Re: Children dead, mom missing (July 25). As disturbed as I am at the report about Lisa Gibson and her children, I am also troubled by her neighbour's comment:

"The first thing you think about is postpartum depression, but stuff like that doesn't happen here."

Depression happens everywhere, to people from all walks of life. It doesn't discriminate based on gender, geography or income.

People with depression need our understanding, support and referral to the appropriate agency for help, such as the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Breast cancer is an example of a disease that "nice women" in my grandmother's and mother's generations just did not mention.

Yet today, due to a brilliant public awareness campaign and countless fundraising events, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who's hesitant to speak of breast cancer.

We need to champion postpartum depression (and mental illness in general), to bring it out into the light so that people are not reluctant to talk about it, to admit they have it or to reach out to those suffering from it.
