Re: Developer takes aim at councillor (Nov. 21). As a realtor, I have to ask how is it that Our Winnipeg consults citizens and stakeholders over a period of two years in the most extensive consultation process ever undertaken in Winnipeg, and developers mindfully follow all its recommendations, yet city council can change the rules on a whim?

Is council against positive growth in Winnipeg? Does it not value the enlarged tax base, long-term employment for skilled tradespeople, and economic spinoff that new development in high-demand, under-served areas would bring?

Winnipeg is blessed with a healthy economy while many other cities struggle. Projected population growth over the next 20 years is astounding. Newcomers need a place to live. Near-zero vacancy rates mean rental units are all but unavailable.

Our Winnipeg identifies critical planning and sustainability issues. Developers are agreeing to what is being asked of them, as per the Our Winnipeg mandate. Fair and equitable measures, not arbitrary 11th-hour changes, are needed in order for Winnipeg to grow and prosper.

Otherwise we might as well hang up a "closed" sign at our borders.
