Letter of the Day

Escaping from escapism

Randall King's article Oct. 31 Civilized, kid-free cinemas, which reports that Cineplex Odeon has launched its VIP Cinemas on McGillivray Boulevard with alcohol availability, leaves me puzzled.

One of the main attractions of the cinema experience is, of course, the opportunity to escape into another world. Alcohol, which numbs perceptive human consciousness, provides a destructive, uncivilized kind of escape.

Why on earth would anyone want to order stiff drinks in order to escape from the escape a good movie provides?

Then it's important to note that the World Health Organization has determined that drinking alcohol, like smoking, is a major cause of cancer. Therefore by establishing its VIP theatres as a place of alcohol consumption in quest of making a bigger buck, Cineplex Odeon is being irresponsible about the health and welfare of its patrons.

Did your headline writer really mean to imply that kids are uncivilized? I certainly hope not.
