Thank you to Dr. Jonas Watson for his editorial New bear exhibit doesn't bear scrutiny (July 12). Finally, a well-informed person stands up publicly and speaks the truth about the polar bear exhibit at the zoo.

The accolades and comments from supporters of the exhibit remind me of the propaganda used to counteract the protests about circus animals -- that circuses educate and protect animals at risk.

Capturing wild and exotic animals and holding them in man-made exhibits has little or nothing to do about respecting or enhancing natural habitats or living things. It has everything to do about commercializing animals for entertainment purposes, and only results in perverting the true nature of living things.

Imagine the impact we humans might have had if we pooled all the money gone into attempting to duplicate "the wild" and actually diverted those resources into protecting and supporting natural habitats where wild animals belong.
