Re: Curtain drops on the Globe (June 11).

The closing of the Globe Cinema at Portage Place is no surprise, not because it's the reality of the marketplace, but because there has been a failure of the Downtown Business Improvement Zone to create circumstances that would attract moviegoers. Where would one go for a coffee or a snack after a movie at Portage Place? Restaurants close at 8 p.m. or earlier. Why is there no coffee shop open in the evening at Portage Place?

There are bars in the area, but moviegoers, for the most part, are not bar patrons. But even so, why is the bar at Portage Place not open in the evenings? And why have so many businesses left Portage Place? What has the BIZ done for Portage Place?

The BIZ is still under the illusion that the MTS Centre and return of the NHL has revitalized the downtown. Not so. Hockey fans do not come downtown to shop before a game.
