Letter of the Day

Financing the apocalypse

  • Print

Once upon a time, when I was young and gullible and fearful of all that a teacher or parent might say -- about a third world war and nuclear bombs and air-raid sirens and doomsday clocks -- I thought I might be lucky to see 2013.

Now that all that "sky is falling" talk about bombs is over, we listen instead to leaders and experts who tell us that the financial time bomb and economic apocalypse will soon be upon us when all debts exceed our simple understanding of the meaning of trillions of dollars owed by our grandchildren yet unborn.

And the fear and dread returns, like an old habit that will never quit. Am I missing something here, or did the peace dividend turn into a large IOU?

On a scale of 1 to 10, how lucky should I feel by 2014?
