A troubled past
Re: Dad's slaying devastated teen (Aug. 22). I can only imagine the emotional impact of losing a parent to violence like this. And now the remaining family has a second violent bereavement to come to terms with. My thoughts are with the survivors. Bless those who are in a position to support them on a journey they did not choose.
The father's lifestyle was the critical factor in the events that would unfold years later. Anything any agency could have done for Tina would have been no more than the Band-Aid that it was.
If Tina Fontaine's last few years were filled with sadness and darkness, much of it, family members say, triggered by the violent killing of her father, then friends and family should have been there for her at that time in her tragic life.
Child and Family Services and foster care was the absolute last resort, because she had nowhere else to go.
Re: Snubbed candidates fuming (Aug. 22). I don't see why they couldn't invite all candidates. Just because someone isn't well-known doesn't automatically mean they are not worthy of consideration. That's the kind of thinking that keeps getting these career politicians re-elected and look where that has got us.
-- Everybody Up
Seems a bit arrogant on the part of the BIZ to exclude candidates. Time restraints are a very weak excuse in my opinion.
-- J Haier
The ones who were excluded would only use up valuable discussion time from those who are actually in the running. Just because one throws their name into the race doesn't mean they should be afforded a voice.

Re: Developers' cash wanted like a sore thumb (Aug. 22). Why would Gord Steeves withhold his donation list until after the election? Is transparency not one of the main issues Winnipeggers want fixed? His true colours are now coming into view; he has shown to be just more of the same. Wait until he is asked to answer some tough questions about his time in EPC, which withheld key information from city council when multimillion-dollar decisions were being made. Get ready everyone, this race has just begun.
