Re: Premier seethes over PM's comments (Aug. 23). Harper's statement that this is a crime, not a sociological issue, is pure political posturing.
Obviously, Tina Fontaine's death is both a crime, and part of a broader social phenomenon -- namely, the grossly disproportionate number of aboriginal women among the missing and murdered.

What's stopping the provincial government from holding its own inquest? Greg could have taken the high road and said since Harper won't hold an inquest the province will.
Not that I want to see my tax dollars fund another inquest that will go nowhere and be ignored.

Re: Moms, dads and dogs (Aug. 23). I am definitely an animal lover. We have cats and a dog... all rescue. However, they don't own clothes, they don't eat with us at the table, and they don't eat our food... they have their own. I do make sure they have good food, toys and treats and I do read the ingredients on their food labels; they go to the vet for regular checkups and shots, and they are loved by us. However, they definitely have a position in the hierarchy of our home, and that's not at the human level. They are pets, members of the family, but in a different position than my kids.
Me, that's a different story: I think I'm at the bottom of the food chain around here.
-- Val Surbey
What business is it of anyone how some people choose to treat their pets? You know nothing of their journey through their life, and what brought them to such a point in that journey.
I usually feel happiness when encountering a pet and owner that have found a bond, connection, or love with each other. Live and let live, people.
Re: O'Shea the right man (Aug. 23). Mike O'Shea is the real deal. He has set the tone for the Bombers. He has provided a vision and made them believe in themselves. That is great leadership.
He gently refuses to be anything other than what he believes. He refused to take the bait that Saturday night's game was a "must-win." He cares, and I suspect very deeply, but he has a playfulness about him that shows he has perspective.
The Bombers have a very impressive coach who appears to be an even more impressive human being. I don't mean to gush, but the guy just gives off a great vibe. Rock on, Mike.
