Police HQ all wet
Re: Storm caused 'critical failure' at new police headquarters (Aug.28). As a piece of critical infrastructure, this is not acceptable. There should be contingency plans for back-up equipment, and all mechanical rooms should be sealed with additional emergency pumps that would keep the critical equipment dry at all costs. Even better, none of this should be in the basement where it can happen.
Who designed this mess? It is a matter of intelligent design -- the main brain of our police.
I hope they are not planning to relocate the 911 service to this building, that's kind of an important service that needs to keep operating, especially during a disaster.
Lots of critical failures. Of greater concern: Who at the highest levels knew about the cost overruns, and why no investigations? How does the former fire chief get canned over literally small change, while the cost issues here are far worse, and yet there's dead silence on doing any investigation?
In all fairness, we did get a huge amount of rain in a very short time. There was lots of flooding in both public and private areas of the city.
Hydrant complaints washed up
Re: Hydrants a drain on wallets (Aug. 28). Sorry, but if you are that unaware or non-observant about fire hydrants, then you really shouldn't complain about being ticketed. Perhaps if you can't cope with this you should strongly consider surrendering your driver's licence.
"Parking closer than three metres away from a fire hydrant will set you back at least $50."
I got one of these last year. At first I couldn't figure out why, until I looked it up. I wasn't parked right in front of it -- in fact, a small car was. I took the spot behind him, but I guess my front bumper was just under the 10-foot minimum from the perpendicular at the curb. I paid it and didn't whine -- I was wrong. I wonder if the commissioners carry tape measures.

I think the curbs should be painted, and possibly set up with permanent markers visible for all drivers. It would eliminate the guesswork for everyone.
And I've seen the tape measure used. They all have one, and they all take digital pictures now, so there's pretty much no excuse you can offer. Just pay up and move on.
