Letter of the Day
In love with the game
I want to thank you for your Jan. 16 article Spoiled NHLers learned to ride bus again during lockout.
As a native Winnipegger currently living the "hockey-wife" life in Germany -- my husband is former Manitoba Moose Brandon Reid -- I have appreciated how the lockout has shone a light on our expat hockey lifestyle.

Many of the Canadian players here in the German elite league DEL are former NHL and AHL players simply looking to extend their careers and make a living doing what they love.
It's true that players here can travel up to eight hours by bus to and from road games, must pack their own gear, often suffer from culture shock and don't make nearly the same money as their NHL buddies.
What DEL players do have in common with NHL players, however, is the same love for the game, enthusiastic and adoring fans and a wonderful lifestyle.
Much team-building, communicating, conflict-resolving and unwinding goes on during these long bus trips. This can often result in humble players and bonded teams.
I'm glad that stars like Blake Wheeler were able to get a taste of our version of "the show" and has shared his experiences with Free Press readers back home.
