Randy Turner's March 23 feature on Brian Pallister, Ladies and gentlemen... meet the Opposition, was more hagiography than political profile. In awe we are informed that Pallister is part Horatio Alger (rags to riches), part Liberace (piano player), part Tony Bennett (singer) and part Nolan Ryan (pitcher).
After this the reader should not be surprised to learn that Pallister is also often regarded as "the smartest guy in the room," although why this is considered an achievement in an assembly of sycophantic acolytes is not explained.
Pallister's personal talents and hobbies may be of interest to his family and friends, but as a voter I would be more interested in an article on his political philosophy and how that would translate into specific policies for the people of Manitoba.
The most important political issue of our time, even if most people don't acknowledge it, is the environment. The most important question is this: will our children still have a planet they can live on half a century from now?
Your feature on the new Progressive Conservative leader, Brian Pallister, tells us that he lives in a 9,000-square-foot mansion with a seven-car heated garage.
No doubt Pallister has worked very hard for his material success. However, a person with such an enormous carbon footprint is not fit for any position of political leadership.
We need less self-indulgence, not more.
