Letter of the Day

Inspired by new generation

  • Print

It was inspiring to read about We Day and all the positive things the younger generation is doing. It's a good thing, too, because my generation, the boomers, has left them a fine mess.

We have been far too busy taking everything we could from the world and have paid little heed to the damage we have done.

The environment is a disaster. A few lone voices have complained about cutting the funding to the Experimental Lakes Area. Even fewer complained when our own tax dollars were used for political advertising to the tune of millions of dollars, enough to fund many ELAs.

Even fewer complained when in a particularly cynical move, the government switched their advertising focus to try and get us to believe they care about and have instituted positive environmental initiatives.

We are sitting back watching while environmental regulations are gutted, holding fast to our mantra of "me first." After all, we elected this government time after time, minority and then majority.

So we had better hope the younger generation continues to work toward the common good and can clean up our mess. Hopefully, they will forgive my generation for our selfishness.
