Letter of the Day
Insulting an honourable father
According to your Associated Press story on March 5, Scandal hangs over papal election, the pope emeritus, Benedict XVI, remains "holed up at the papal residence" as church cardinals gather to elect his successor.
The term "holed up" suggests that he is in hiding like a fugitive. The Holy Father has served his church honourably for 62 years. He has retired from public view after resigning from an office he felt that he could no longer fulfil effectively because of his advanced years and declining health.
To suggest that he is now "holed up" seems an extremely poor and disrespectful choice of words to describe his seclusion.
