Re: Identifying the Jets (Letters, July 26). Ruth Taronno shouldn't lose too much sleep over the potential for the Jets name and logo to cause people worldwide to perceive Canada and Winnipeg as becoming more militaristic and less peaceable.
According to such logic, when the Flames came to Calgary, they should have caused an immediate spike in cases of arson, and when the Predators arrived in Nashville, the city should have become a magnet for stalkers and child molesters.
And is there any evidence that the Chicago Blackhawks logo triggered an increase in racism toward First Nations people, or has there been an influx of loan sharks in the Bay area ever since the San Jose Sharks franchise was created?

All I can say to Ruth Taronno is "take a pill." Our culture has always had a militaristic side. We can pursue peace, but sometimes the only option is force.
By the way, calling hockey a game is a stretch, in my opinion. What happens on the ice would often lead to an assault-with-a-weapon charge on the street.

I love the new Jets logo. The nod to the Royal Canadian Air Force is brilliant. However, to a colour-blind guy like me, the shaded half of the plane blends in with the Maple Leaf, so from a small distance away there appears to be only half a jet on the logo.
It certainly appears that way from the July 23 Free Press photo of the guys holding up their T-shirts. I hope this doesn't result in a half-hearted effort on the ice. Maybe they'll start selling 0.5 beer at the MTS Centre.
