Letters to the Editor

Living in their own world

Letter of the day

Re: PM's aide covered Duffy's repayment (May 16). Although the Harper government promises a tough stance on lawbreakers, it is interesting to note how Stephen Harper handles real crimes.

I refer here to Sen. Mike Duffy's misappropriation of taxpayers' money to the tune of $90,000. The penalty: Duffy simply must return the money to its rightful owners, the people of Canada.

Even this penalty, however, appears too harsh for the prime minister. Instead, Harper's chief of staff then steps in and actually pays the tab.

I note in your same edition, a crime report of a man committing a "massive fraud" totalling approximately $18,000 (Fraud artist faces 7-year sentence). The penalty for him: a seven-year prison sentence.

Too bad for him that the PMO did not intervene earlier and simply pay back the $18,000.

The latest revelations from Ottawa about the prime minister's chief of staff bailing out Sen. Mike Duffy provides just one more example of what our politicians think of us taxpayers.

They are in their own little world of power and money, and they simply don't give a damn about the rest of us. Never did, and never will.

We are all being told to tighten our belts and be honest citizens, while they show us how corrupt they are. Of course, once they get caught, they all are very contrite and expect us to believe them.

The growing murmuring you hear from behind closed doors in Ottawa? That would be members of the Tory caucus, standing on tip-toe, up to their chins in corruption, telling each other through barely parted lips, "Don't make waves. Don't make waves."
