Congratulations to David Matas on receiving yet another well-deserved award for his work in the promotion of human rights and social justice (International award for human rights lawyer Matas, July 10).

Several years ago I called on Matas for help when a former student of mine was about to be deported. He met with me immediately, spent hours reviewing the case and called me often at home.

This humble, gentle, soft-spoken man would only take a nominal fee. It was a difficult case and though not successful, I have long admired the tenacity and determination of this wonderful man in his pursuit of justice and peace.
