Re: Canadian badly beaten in Mexican resort (Jan. 24). While it is a terrible tragedy that innocent Canadians have been attacked and even killed in Mexico, I must be an advocate for Mexicans. It is like an American saying she would not holiday in Victoria because she read of murders in Winnipeg.

Mexico is a very big country, and most visitors are perfectly safe. During my vacation in Puerto Vallarta last month, I felt safer than on many streets of our city. I could walk on downtown streets day or night alone and feel protected, not endangered, by groups or individuals, who were invariably kind and helpful at every step.

One night on my way home from dinner with friends, I got on the wrong bus and ended up in a dark, remote area and every passenger and the driver on that bus was most helpful and concerned to get this "turista" safely home.

Mexican people in general are warm-hearted and cheerful and have a wonderful sense of humour. Ordinary people are hurting because of the American economy and the scaring off of tourists by violence the drug gangs cause.

People continue to take cruises even though accidents occur with loss of life. Travel to any foreign country brings risks, and I do not mean to diminish the anguish of those individuals who have experienced the pain of losing loved ones. If it were my friend or relative that had been hurt, I would feel that the association with Mexico would make it too painful to go there. But gangs are not everywhere, and Mexico is still a friendly place to visit, or to live.
