Modest proposal for parking

Re: Parking fees killed business: owner (Jan. 8). Colin Stewart of the Winnipeg Parking Authority seems quite happy with himself and the city's plan to increase turnover and available parking in the Exchange and other downtown areas by increasing the parking rates. It is too bad it has had such a negative impact on the businesses that pay the taxes downtown that they have to close due to a lack of traffic.

Maybe, since the city's plan to increase vacancy in parking spaces is such a success, they should consider raising parking rates even more. People coming downtown, if there are any who even care to anymore, will be able to find plenty of parking spots outside of all of their favourite businesses, if any of them remain viable and open.

How ignorant of Stewart to say they have noticed that where rates are lower "there's less space." He should take a look at the many malls around the city where parking is free and take note the lots there are virtually full. It is too bad for the owners of the businesses in those malls where you cannot find a spot; they must be suffering terribly.
