Music part of all cultures

Re: Aboriginal talent lauded at the MTS Centre (Aug. 19). Congratulations to all the winners at the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards. You are all role models for aboriginal achievement. However, I did not hear or read any news of Manitoba chiefs protesting this event, claiming cultural genocide.

I realize that music is part of aboriginal culture -- music is part of all cultures -- but I don't recall reading any historical texts on native societies that mention blues, rap, hip hop and rock music, award shows or wearing formal tuxes with bow ties.

The irony of Manitoba chiefs whining that the word genocide will not be used by the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, citing genocide through forced assimilation, is that it is they that are the most assimilated in western culture.
