Re: All-day kindergarten, benefits modest (Sept. 26). In discussions of early-childhood education issues, what I have always found to be glaringly absent is advice to parents on what they should be doing more of.
If children are not as ready as they should be, for kindergarten or Grade 1, the first step for the majority of them should be a workbook-guide on how to get them ready.
As a parent I have always found this omission to be insulting. The idea is that only professional educators and caregivers can help my child. Full-time daycare has been touted as beneficial to children, yet apparently even these children are not ready for school.
Better parental instruction from school divisions may be all that is needed. Not all small children learn better, or are happy, in an institutional setting, and not all children are high-risk. I, too, agree that the money could be better spent for the benefit of families and children.
