Letter of the day: People over pets

  • Print

People like Janice Rosen and Janelle McLeod (Owners, airlines, doctors debate ban, Aug. 24) believe that the "allergy excuse" is "blown out of proportion" with regard to allowing pets in aircraft cabins.

First of all, I have a dog. I'm more than sympathetic to the plight of all animals. But I also have severe allergies, particularly to cats. If I were anywhere near a cat in an airplane cabin I would have not only an allergic but likely an asthmatic response that would be potentially severe.

I'm not sure how people think that their love of their pets (or the comfort of the animal) should be a higher priority than the safety of fellow passengers. I guess this is a consequence of the increasingly narcissistic and entitled society that we live in.

And please, unless you've ever had severe allergies, don't even think about telling me about how they're "overblown." If it's so important to travel with your pet, put them in cargo or make alternate arrangements.

I can't believe that I even have to state this in a letter.
