I read Brent Bellamy's July 9 article, Pumping-station conundrum, with interest. I often drive by the James Avenue Pumping Station and, as a former Torontonian, I always pine for this building to be turned into a mini-St. Lawrence Market -- a seven-day-a-week mixed use of restaurants, fruit and veggie vendors and Manitoba producers of poultry and beef.
Having a master's in environmental studies with an interest in mixed-use downtown dwellings, I'm constantly stunned that nearby condo owners haven't cried out for this property to be developed to have easy access to basic food needs.
Understanding the high cost of doing so, I can only rejoice over how some visionary developer in my hometown found the cash to turn the once-derelict and off-limits Gooderham and Worts building into the amazing Distillery District.
If you hear of anyone striking up a committee to turn this jewel into a much-admired gem, please put my name forward. I'd love to make this happen.
